Overview

Facilitating problem-based math lessons means creating the space and conditions for students to engage in discourse, grappling and applying a range of strategies to solve problems. Teachers work to maintain the cognitive demand of a task by helping students understand what to do and providing them with enough information to tackle a task. In the second session of the virtual launch series, participants will explore the routines and the design of each lesson component in order to understand how they support teaching and facilitating problem-based lessons.

Learning Experience

• Define: Experience and learn about warm-up routines in order to see how they build student confidence and engagement in problem-solving.
• Explore: Learn and experience the launch-work-synthesis structure of lesson activities to understand how this structure supports students to learn through problem-solving.
• Build: Understand how the lesson synthesis connects student ideas to the lesson purpose and the cool-down checks student understanding.
