About This Strategy

This 2.5-hour strategy helps students answer: What are the impacts of protests? Students share their responses to this question using Adobe Spark Page. You can use this strategy for any content, and the strategy can also be adapted for use with other Adobe products such as Illustrator or Muse. 

Because Adobe Spark Page enables critical thinking along with visual design, this strategy empowers students to demonstrate historical thinking as well as creativity in a deep and meaningful way.

Outline for Teachers

150 minutes

Learn. 

Students choose an organized dissent campaign (series of protests over a period of time that sparked a movement for change) to better understand the impact protests have had on the socio-political structure.  An example is the Civil Rights Movement in the US or student activist movements in Poland or Eastern Europe in the 1960s that led to Solidarity in the 1980s. (30 minutes)

Research. 

Students break into digital or in person groups and find additional sources about their chosen protest movements, choosing valid sources that corroborate facts across those sources. Students follow these steps. (60 minutes)

Create. 

Students design and create their webpage using Adobe Spark Page.  Students use these steps to guide them. Students can examine an example  or watch a tutorial  if needed. For a greater creative challenge, students can use Adobe Illustrator to expand their creative boundaries and even make their own templates. (60 minutes)

Share. 

Students share and publish their webpage. 

Steps for Students

This 2.5-hour strategy helps you answer big questions about the impact of protests while practicing how to build a web page on Adobe Spark Page.

Spark Page enables you to visually communicate your  learning and  empowers you to demonstrate your understanding in a deep and meaningful way.  For a greater challenge, you may also use Adobe Illustrator.

Steps:

1. Collect information on your chosen protest movement. Use the guidance listed below when selecting protest movements:  (60 minutes)

  • Focus your efforts on protest movements after 1910.

  • These are not one-day events but rather a series of protests over a period of days, weeks, or months that sparked a movement for change in order to understand the impact protests have had in the United States. Examples include things like the fight for Women’s Suffrage or the Montgomery Bus Boycott . 

  • Particular attention should be paid to the events leading up to the protests, the justification for the type of protests that people engaged in, the actions people took during those protests, and the impact of the protests on individuals, communities, and the country.  

  • Focus your research on easily accessible and highly reputable websites like pbs.org.

2. Evaluate the information you gathered so far and decide which two protest movements should be the focus of your webpage.  At minimum, when making your choices ask yourself these questions: (10 minutes)

Which offered facts that could likely be corroborated across multiple sources?

3. Research more about your two chosen protest movements. (60 minutes)

  • Which offered facts via sources deemed valid?

  • Which facts can be corroborated across multiple sources?

  • Particular attention should be paid to the events leading up to the protests, the justification for the type of protests that people engaged in, the actions people took during those protests, and the impact of the protests on individuals, communities, and the country.  

4. Create a web page using Adobe Spark Page that effectively communicates the information you collected. Use the rubric as a guide for your decisions. (60 minutes)

  • Have at least 4 “pages”

    • The movement, timeline and definition

    • How the movement changed over time 

    • The impact of the movement on society and the world 

    • Where you see the movement going

5. Share and publish your webpage as directed by your instructor.
