About This Strategy

This 1.5- to 2-hour strategy invites students to create a webpage where they use curricular and co-curricular experiences to reflect upon their personal career competency, acumen, and development using Adobe Spark Page. Students demonstrate their self-knowledge and forecast which competencies they will need to gain proficiency in over time.  They explain how they will develop strategies to acquire the necessary skills. This strategy could be adapted for use with Adobe Spark Post.

Because Adobe Spark Page enables quick and professional articulation of concepts and ideas through the use of text and image, this strategy empowers students to demonstrate personal reflection, critical thinking, and assessment in a deeply personal and meaningful way.

Steps for Students

Using Adobe Spark Page, you will create a webpage to document and reflect upon professional competencies developed through your curricular and co-curricular experiences. In addition to creating an appealing webpage documenting your experiences, your reflection will help you articulate the skills and abilities sought by employers and determine competencies you will need to further develop over time.

Because Adobe Spark Page enables quick and professional articulation of concepts and ideas through the use of text and image, this strategy empowers you to demonstrate personal reflection, critical thinking, and assessment in a deeply personal and meaningful way.

Steps:

1. Reflect upon the duties, responsibilities, tasks, and observations you completed during internships, student employment, coursework and projects, community service, job shadowing, career research etc. To prepare content for your page, write answers to the following questions: (40 minutes)

  • What essential skills did you develop during these experiences?

  • Which of your strengths did you demonstrate?

  • Did you learn anything new about yourself?

  • Did your view of a career, occupation, or field of study change based on these experiences? If so, how?

  • For the career field or occupation you are pursuing, what competencies will you need to further develop? How do you think you will accomplish this?

To aid your reflection, you can use the NACE Career Competencies for inspiration. Or find an occupation of interest on O*NET and consider the skills and abilities necessary.

2. Identify videos and images that will help you describe your experiences and the development of your professional competencies. For example, you might include a short video that tells the viewer more about an organization of interest.  You might use videos or images you find online (copyright-free) or within Adobe Spark, or images and videos of you, taken or obtained during your curricular and co-curricular experiences. (20 minutes)

3. In Adobe Spark, build your Page. Please include a description of one career area or occupation of interest and three associated  competencies you are developing and/or learning.

Please review the rubric to understand how your Spark Page will be evaluated. For guidance, watch this tutorial and review this student example

If you would prefer to use Adobe Spark Post, follow this tutorial.

4. Share your Adobe Spark Page as directed by your instructor.
