About This Strategy

In this strategy, teachers will make paper and pencil assignments digital by adding in video directions. Teachers can take any template students are working on and make it digital by embedding video, audio, and visual supports for students to assist them with independent work.This strategy is especially helpful during activities when teachers find themselves assisting frequently with reading directions and with understanding challenging vocabulary.  Teachers can use this strategy with English Learners, students with disabilities, and as an additional support during distance learning. Teachers will know the strategy is effective if students are able to complete independent work with less support.

Implementation Steps

  1. Find a paper and pencil activity that is aligned to the current unit of study.
    • Consider using this strategy for assignments to assess skill mastery rather than reading comprehension, as some of the embedded supports include reading to students. 
    • Creating digital worksheets will not be necessary for every assignment. When determining whether or not to use this strategy, consider when it is most challenging to support the needs of all students and consider which types of support are needed. 
  2. Consider student needs and skill master. Consider if the students you are using this strategy for need:
    • audio/visual directions
    • audio for all text
    • pictures to support text
    • video modeling
    • drag and drop
  3. Use the screenshot or cropping tool on the computer to put parts of the worksheet into a google slideshow. 
    • On most Windows operating computers, push "fn" and "prtsc". This copies a picture of your screen. 
    • Open the Google Slides
    • Right click and push paste
    • Double-click on the image and use the black lines to crop the picture
    • For some activities, it may work well to put only one question on a slide. 
      • Activities with large pictures would be better seen on 1 slide each
      • Activities with a lot of text would be beneficial to put 2 slide per question so that it doesn't become overwhelming for the student
      • Activities like matching would need to remain on one page since they have to pick the best match
  4. Record yourself reading the directions and walking students through the activity using the device's camera.
    • Remember to make sure there is enough lighting before taking the video so that the image is clear
    • Make sure there is no background noise and if at all possible use a microphone to make the audio even clearer
    • Teachers can consult the links in the resources section to learn how to use common recording tools like Screencastify and Online Voice Recorder
  5. Add other visuals as necessary depending on the level of modification needed.
    • Add pictures to support scaffolding
      • See the document "Scaffolding with Pictures" for a few examples
    • Add text boxes for students to drag and drop answers
      • Consult the "How to Create Digital Worksheets video" in the resources section to learn how to create these types of boxes
      • View the finished product called "Example Student Assignment"
  6. Add other audio to read sentences within the worksheet.
    • Open online-voice-recorder.com
    • Record the sentence you want read to students.
    • You can crop the audio at the beginning and end by dragging the bar to where you want it to start and end. 
      • Remember to re-record if your first recording is not clear
      • This works best with no background noise
      • Save the audio
      • In Google Slides, click Insert > Audio
      • Select the saved recording
      • A play button will appear; move it near the text and adjust the size of the play button
  7. Distribute the digital worksheet to students for completion. 

EL Modification

This strategy supports EL students by the heavy use of audio and visual scaffolds, but it can be adapted further for students needing more targeted language support. 

Modifications:

  1. Add audio directions in students' native language to support those who are not yet fluent in English. 
    • Add audio for key vocabulary if students do not need all the words translated
    • Copy the text you want translated
    • Paste it into Google Translate
    • Push the play button if you need to know how to say the words
    • Record the words using Online Voice Recorder
    • Copy the language you want into your original document for added textual support
  2. Add picture scaffolds for key vocabulary. 

 

Special Education Modification

To modify for students who need more help with processing, teachers might consider including more pictures, more audio, and even a video embedded that gives directions modeling completion of the assignment, while the student does the work on the worksheet. 

Modifications:

  1. Create your digital worksheet as described in the implementation steps above. 
  2. Create a video like the one linked below with the teacher modeling the activity using Screencastify. 
    • ​​​​​​​While modeling the video, work slowly so students have time to also do the work while watching the video. 
  3. Embed the video beside the digital worksheet to support students while completing their assignment. 
  4. You may have to change the slide size to have space for the embedded video. 
    • ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Click File > Page Setup > Custom
    • Pick a size that will fit both your video and the student work. This may take some trial and error. 

Digital Worksheets with Video Directions for Distance Learning

This strategy, using the implementation steps, can support students during distance learning. When used during distance learning, teachers should first model the digital worksheet's use during a synchronous meeting.

Implementation Steps:

  1. Model during a synchronous meeting. 
    • Show how to drag and drop
    • Show how to click the video button
    • Show how to scroll over
    • Show how to click the audio play buttons
  2. Share a copy of an assignment with students during a live meeting and walk through the how-to steps so when students complete independently, they have already practiced. 
    • This works best if you have some sort of screen monitoring system with your students so you can see their screens.

Tech Tools

Screencastify

  • Screencastify is a Chrome Extension that allows users to quickly record a video of whatever is on the screen. Users can include narration and an embedded webcam. Videos can be downloaded and saved to Google Drive or to YouTube.
  • This tool supports this strategy because it is easy to use to make student directions or modeling lessons. 

Google Slides

  • Google slides is an online presentation builder (part of google apps) that allows users to create and share presentation slides.

  • This tool supports this strategy because it allows you to add text, pictures, video, and audio easily in most formats that you choose to recreate a worksheet in a digital space

Online Voice Recorder

  • Online Voice Recorder is a website that allows users to quickly record an audio recording of just their voice. Users can edit the narration easily and audio clips can be downloaded or saved to google drive.

  • This tool supports this strategy because it is an easy way to record audio directions to embed into the google slides.
