Overview

In this workshop, educators will explore instructional strategies for vocabulary instruction across subject areas. We will define vocabulary tiers and explore instructional moves for the whole staff. Participants will learn how to leverage vocabulary as an opportunity for engagement and discourse and will explore strategies that help students retain and use new vocabulary. This workshop is appropriate for teachers across all K-12 subject areas.

I plan high-quality lessons for language comprehension and literacy instruction, including reading fluency, vocabulary, language structures, and verbal reasoning.

Learning Experience

• Define the importance of explicit vocabulary instruction.
• Explore strategies for teaching key vocabulary through direct instruction and for cultivating a vocabulary-rich classroom that fosters word growth beyond explicit instruction.
• Build an action plan for explicitly teaching Tier 2 vocabulary words and/or cultivating a vocabulary-rich classroom.
