Tracing the Learning Progression of a Unit

Focus Area: OUR K-5 / IM K-5 Math

Phase: Targeted Support

Available Now

IM K-5 units are designed to tell a mathematical story that helps students explore concepts and develop number sense over time. To bring this to life, teachers need to understand the learning progression of a unit and how the lessons are sequenced to help students build fluency over time. In this 2-hour virtual workshop, participants will choose an upcoming unit to plan. They will work with a collaborative group to:

  • Defining the learning goals of the unit
  • Explore the learning progression of the sections of the unit
  • Build a strategic plan for teaching the unit they explored

The insights gained from this in-depth study of one unit will support their day-to-day and long-term planning and instruction going forward.

These workshops are for educators currently working with the IM K-5 Math curriculum, and are especially useful for those who are in their first year of teaching with the curriculum materials.

I leverage the curriculum’s problem-based structures to plan meaningful learning experiences for my students.

Learning Experience

During the workshop, participants will...

  • The structure of an IM K-5 Math unit and how the learning experiences are sequenced to build students’ conceptual understanding over time
  • The learning goals of a specific upcoming unit

  • The learning progression of the unit and the implications for how to pace the lessons and when to pause to reinforce key concepts

  • A plan for teaching the unit in a way that supports problem-based math learning within their individual school context
