Research has demonstrated that phonological awareness, the ability to recognize and manipulate sounds in words, must be taught through explicit, systematic, data-driven instruction, using evidence-based practices that are responsive to student needs. In this workshop, participants will deepen their understanding of this critical foundational skill as they define effective phonological awareness instruction. They will explore instructional practices and activities that support students in developing a strong awareness of the 44 English phonemes and will build a personal action plan for refining current routines and practices in phonological awareness instruction.
