As teachers gain comfort with the basic implementation of the OUR 6-8/IM 6-12 Math Curriculum, this virtual course builds knowledge and confidence with using the 5 Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematical Discussions. The 5 Practices- Anticipate, Monitor, Select, Sequence, Connect- provide teachers with a framework for intentionally soliciting student thinking and organizing specific student ideas in a discussion that supports all students in the class to develop their conceptual understanding.
This series of three, 2-hour sessions introduces teachers to the 5 Practices, how this framework is embedded in the OUR 6-8/IM 6-12 Math curriculum, and an approach to planning out 5 Practices-style discussion. Participants have opportunities to experience the 5 Practices as their students will, as well as space to work together to plan for specific curriculum activities. The series of workshops is designed to provide teachers with the chance to try out the activities they plan in between meetings, and then to come back together to share their learnings and collaborate around further plans.
