Learning to read and spell using an alphabetic system like English is complex for beginners, requiring an understanding of the alphabetic principle, which links printed letters to their corresponding speech sounds. Kindergarten and first-grade students need daily, systematic phonics instruction that uses research-based practices to teach these sound-symbol relationships. In this 2-hour virtual workshop, participants will define key terms, explore research-based instructional routines, and build an action plan to refine their teaching practices for sound-symbol correspondences.
