Michelle's students determine which supermarket is offering the better deal for bananas. Once students complete the problem, Michelle asks the students to stand up and pair up with a partner that has a different answer.
The students are going to complete the following problem: In this week’s ad, Tony’s Finer foods advertises bananas on sale for 5 lbs for $4.45. Jewel has them on sale for $.95/pound. Which store has the better deal? This problem will reactivate prior knowledge. The students will be required to use a model to support their answer (SMP 4). If students finish early, they can explain their solution in words. This can also be used as a formative assessment.
Tiffany splits the class in half. Half of the class receives problem A. The other half receives problem B. Students work independently for five minutes before partnering up with someone who has the same problem for 10 minutes. During this time, they give and get help on their problem. Then, students partner up with someone who had a different problem and they review and critique each other's work.
