Common Core Connection

This is the end of the year and I am really trying to extend my students learning to the next grade. Analyzing the author's craft and how authors of informational texts use text features to present information is a very complex skill. That is what my students do in this lesson. It is challenging for first graders to think from the perspective of the author, but it really helps them develop a much better understanding of texts. I find that understanding the author's craft really aids in comprehension and improves students ability to find evidence in text. It seems like they know where to look for answers to questions as well after studying the text features.

Lesson Overview

The students write an essay analyzing several text features that the author uses and how they add specific information to the text. Really this is one lesson that I designed to prepare my students for the PARCC Assessment, but it also contains a great higher order thinking activity. The students create a paragraph with me and then on their own. Then they get to make changes to their work based on peer evaluations. Check out the Wake Up Powerpoint I use.

Introductory Activity

I project the lesson image and ask my students to discuss what text features they notice and why the author chose them. This gives me an opportunity to assess their prior knowledge. Then I share some of their conversations.

Next, I share the lesson plan so my students know what to expect. Last, we chant the lesson goal to make sure my students understand the lesson goal, "I can identify and analyze text features."

This is when I use formative assessment to see what my students know. I ask them to discuss with their partner one reason that author's use text features.  I listen so I can share some of their comments. Then I share that I hopes they noticed author's use captions tell about the pictures and bold headings to tell about specific sections.

Then we chant the lesson goal. This focuses the class on the lesson goal which helps them retain the information in the lesson.
