Warm Up

15 minutes

Today is Free Read Friday.  Students will read their personal library books for the first 15 minutes of class.

Pairs Activity

30 minutes

Class today will basically involve closing out the powerpoint we have been using for several days with a review activity. As today is about review, having a reference point is important.  At this point, students should have the text structures chart and several example pieces; however, access to the powerpoint is ideal as well.  Since I have laptops in the classroom and utilize blended learning, I link any resource electronically to my students' Edmodo classroom.  If you do not have this capability, I suggest printing "handout" copies of the powerpoint with 6 slides per page so students can have a copy to refer to when needed. 

Everything needed can be found on slides 66-77.  The slides with the example pieces (not the answers) will need to be printed (one per page) and placed around the room. To eliminate crowding I usually print two of each.

The student handout referenced in the PP is simply a print out of the same slides you hang around the room but in handout/notes format where you can fit them all on the front and back of a page with blanks on the right side of the slides for answers. 

Be sure to number the examples on the wall and the student handout so that they correspond before printing the student handout.  This will make the process easier.

After students have had time to walk around the room with their partner and make their choices, you can review the pieces and correct answers (using the PP) in whatever way works best for your students.  This is meant to be a fun activity.

*By the way - I have a few references at the end of this powerpoint, but it is such a hodgepodge of my own ideas and a multitude of others shared online and at confereneces  across the years, I'm not sure everyone is properly acknowledged.  This activity is great, so I'd love to give a shout out to the person who create it if you're out there.  

Wrap Up

10 minutes

To wrap up class, I'll ask students to pick up an article from their caddy.  Their task is to read the article before class tomorrow to prepare for an assignment. I will emphasize that each table has a different article, so it is imperative that you get one from your caddy. Students will have the remaining time in class to read and they'll be able to take this home tonight so everyone has ample time to prepare and come in on the same page tomorrow as they will do a group assignment.
