# Problem Solving with Scientific Notation Part III

## Objective: SWBAT to solve problems by performing operations with numbers expressed in scientific notation.

## Big Idea: Now that students have practiced basic operations (adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing) with bare numbers expressed in scientific notation, they are ready to solve problems within a real-world context.

#### Warm Up

For today's Warm Up assignment, students must use their knowledge of scientific notation to solve two problems. As students work, I move throughout the room checking student work. I am watching for common errors like applying incorrect operations or failing to write numbers in scientific notation correctly.

Once the timer sounds after 5 minutes, I call the students to the smart board to go over the answers. I call on random students (selected from a cup of name sticks) to share the answers they found. We then work to come to consensus by class verification.

For today's Work Time assignment, I have selected a task from the Math Assessment Project called a_million_dollars_task. The task requires students to calculate a variety of numbers like the number of hamburgers that can be purchased with a million dollars.

Once student finish the task, I instruct students to create their own million dollar task problem.
