Comparing and Contrasting With the Three Little Pigs

Objective: SWBAT compare and contrast themes, settings, and plots of stories about the same or similar characters.
During this lesson I take an opportunity to see how well students can compare and contrast two stories on their own. I ask students to read two different stories, The Three Little Pigs by Steven Kellogg and The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka. Students are asked to use a graphic organizer to compare and contrast the two stories.
To introduce this lesson, I have students take a look at two similar stories. I show students a copy of The Three Little Pigs by Steven Kellogg and The True story of the Three Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka. I ask students to take a look at each book cover and tell what they think is the same about the books and what they think is different. After a brief discussion, I tell students that they will be reading both stories in order to tell me the differences and similarities between the stories. I explain to students that they will use a graphic organizer to first compare and contrast the two stories and then they will summarize the likes and differences between the two stories in a paragraph.
I give students a copy of each story and have them use a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast both stories. In the previous lesson, students have compared and contrast through writing so I have them summarize the similarities and differences between the stories in short paragraph after reading the two stories.
Wrap Up/ Closing
To close out the lesson I asked some students to share their responses. Afterwards, I collect students work and use it to see if students are able to explain the similarities and differences between two stories with similar characters.
