Tomorrow my students are taking their end of the year common assessment, so we spent about ten minutes reviewing literary devices such as simile, metaphor, alliteration, onomatopoeia, etc. I collected some examples from the text and put them in a PowerPoint, which you can find here.
Each group got a dry erase board and marker. Their task was to read the quote on the screen, decide which type of figurative language it was an example of, write it on the board, and hold the board
up. The first group to correctly identify the example and explain correctly got a point.
This took about ten minutes (more than ten with my inclusion classes) and was a fun way to both review literary devices and see that they are all around us.

Yesterday students answered some text dependent questions that helped them prepare for today's discussion of why Katniss has such a hard time forming relationships. All those questions could be considered under the umbrella of the questions in the picture below. Here's a video that shows a short snippet of one class' discussion.
I divided my classes up into three groups and each group got six minutes to discuss. In hindsight, I wish I had divided the students up into more, smaller groups rather than three large groups for a fishbowl. It's just too close to the end of the year for the students to maintain the focus required for a literary fishbowl.
Each group had a leader that was responsible for keeping the group on task. The leader could be responsible for asking questions, but they certainly weren't the only person who could bring up questions.
