Area of Polygons Quiz
Lesson 10 of 11
Objective: SWBAT show their understanding of finding the area of polygons.
Although there are only 3 problems on this quiz, several geometry concepts will be assessed.
For problem 1, students will have to find the area of the irregular polygon by either dividing into smaller polygons or creating a larger polygon. Using either method, students will have to find the missing dimensions, before using the area formulas. Depending on the method, students will have to know the area formulas for a rectangle, trapezoid, and triangle.
For problem 2, students will have use the area formula for a rectangle and triangle. They will need to conclude that to determine the area of the shaded region, they will have to subtract the two areas.
For problem 3, students will have to find the area of the irregular polygon by dividing it into a square and triangle. They will need to know and apply the area formulas and conclude that the areas should be added.
Administering the Quiz
Students will be given 20 to 30 minutes to complete the Area of Polygons Quiz. They will not be allowed to use their notes or discuss their work with another student.
If students should finish early I will encourage them to check their work. They should make sure that they have found the missing dimensions and applied the formulas correctly.
If students feel comfortable with their work and answers, I will give them a Area of Irregular Polygon Challenge for extra credit. The challenge problem continues with the focus of finding the area of an irregular polygon, but students may have greater difficulty dividing the shape and finding the missing dimensions.
