Flowers for You: Skip Count by 5s to 20

Objective: Student will be able to count by 5s to 20.
For this part of the lesson, you will need a copy of the story, Flowers for My Friend: Count by Five. I print the book on a colored printer, laminate the pages for durability and bind it with a comb binder. Stapling or using book rings would also work well.
I gather the students around my big chair. I ask them, has anyone ever given you flowers? Have you ever given anyone flowers? I give the students time to share their answers. There is a lot of excitement, so I give them an opportunity to turn to a neighbor and share their flower stories.
I tell the students, This story is called, Flowers for My Friend.
For this portion of the lesson, I use the Skip Counting by 5s to 20 SMART Board file. If you have a different type of interactive whiteboard, you can still use this lesson by opening the file in Smart Notebook Express. There is also a PDF file you can use to recreate this part of the lesson.
I gather my students in front of the SMART Board. I have cards with each student's name on. These cards are used for selecting who will come up to the SMART Board.
I open the first slide (SMART Board Slide 1) with the lesson objective written in "student friendly" terms. There is a content objective and a language objective to help focus on vocabulary expansion for my English Learners (ELs) to be congruent with SIOP instructional techniques. I read these objectives aloud for my students.
I can skip count to 20 by fives.
I can tell a friend how many objects are in a group by skip counting by fives.
We then continue with the rest of the slides.
Slide 2: I can count these flowers to find out how many there are. Can you count them with me?
Slide 3: What if we have two bundles of flowers? Is there an easier way to count the flowers? If I know that each bundle is 5 could I skip some numbers to count them?
Slide 4: When I skip count, I skip numbers. Let's look at the number line. If I count by fives, I only say every 5th number. I skip the others. I write the numbers down on the lines.
Slide 5: It's kind of like saying some numbers in your head...
I only say 5, 10, 15, 20.
Slide 6: I know there are five flowers in each bunch of flowers. Let's use the number line to help us count these flowers. I invite a student to come up to the Smartboard and count the flowers.
Slides 7-10: Continue as above.
Slide 10: Let's see if you can do it without the numbers circled on the number line. Again a student is invited up to fill in the blanks.
Slides 11-14: Continue as above.
Slide 15: It is now Turn and Talk Time. I use the instructional strategy of Turn and Talk to increase the academic language of my students. This is especially beneficial for students who are English Language Learners. Every student in my class has a Turn and Talk partner. I make sure that everyone has their partner by holding hands with the partners and holding their hands in the air. I read them the question from the slide, My friend counted these flowers, how did he do? Did he make a mistake? If so, what was his mistake? I give the students time to talk. After they are done, I ask a student to share with the class. The student explains that my friend made a mistake. He started out counting by 5s then he made a mistake. I expand on the student's answer by saying, That's right. My friend counted by 5s, but the he switched to counting by 1s instead of continuing to count by 5s.
We then move to our tables for guided practice.
For this section of the lesson, you will need one set of the Count by 5 Numbers for Practice. I laminate the cards for durability. This allows me to reuse the cards.
I pass out one set of cards to each student. I tell the students that I want them to skip count by 5s to put the cards in order.
The students work to put the numbers in order. Students who are struggling get assistance from me. This gives me a quick check of who will need to some extra assistance during independent practice.
When the students are done, I collect the cards and we prepare for independent practice.
For independent practice, you will need Skip Counting in the Flower Shop included as a PDF with this lesson. You will need to print and cut out the cards and post them around the classroom. You will also need copies of the recording sheet for each student.
The students move around the classroom and they record the number of flowers on each card in the corresponding place on each card. This activity allows me plenty of opportunity to see how well the students understand the concept of skip counting.
As the students finish, I check their work and they put it in their mailbox.
