Objective: SWBAT understand how bold words, headings, and captions provide important information about a topic.

Hook
Common Core Connection
Standard RI.1.5 is under "craft and structure," so I approach teaching this by analyzing how the author chose to present the information and why. This lesson focuses on using headings, bold print, and captions. Keep in mind, RI.1.5 states that students should know glossary, headings, table of contents, electronic menus, and icons. But, I am going to extend this lesson to the second grade standard and include captions and subheadings. I often expose my students to the skills they will be introduced to in the next grade at the end of the year. Plus, bold words, headings, and captions are essential for understanding this particular text, and I want my students to be able to access it well.
Lesson Overview
The class works works with their Peanut Butter Jelly Partners and do Transitions every twenty minutes. I have a video on each strategy in the resource section.
The guided practice and partner work provide an opportunity to for the class to complete a graphic organizer, which is in the resources, about how the author uses captions, headings, and bold print to present information.
Introductory Activity
I like to excite the class by projecting the lesson image on the Smart board, and asking them to discuss text features they might use to present information about a with e fox. I listen closely to assess their knowledge aknow bout text features
Then I share the lesson plan so students know what to expect. Last, we chant the lesson goal, "I can understand why authors choose to use captions, headings, and bold words."
