Tarzan: The Book's Always Better...Or Is It?

Objective: SWBAT compare and contrast all three versions of "Tarzan," the play, the book, and the movie. Students will also begin an opinion writing project by organizing their thoughts on a graphic organizer.
Compare and Contrast
We have now had the chance to view the music play, the movie, and read the book of the story "Tarzan." today we are going to take a look at the similarities and differences between the three versions.
To start our lesson out today, we will do a "Think Pair Share." I will ask the students to brainstorm together some of the similarities and differences between the play, book, and movie versions of "Tarzan."
After the students have had a chance to brainstorm with a partner during the "Think Pair Share," I will have the students complete a triple Venn Diagram. We will talk about where to record similarities and differences. I have included the Ven Diagram in the resource section.
After the students have had a chance to analyze the similarities and differences between the play, movie, and book versions of "Tarzan," I will have the students think about which version they enjoyed the most and why. I want them to keep their opinions to themselves for this activity because I want them to form their own opinions and be able to back those opinions up. I don't want them to write about their friend's opinion. We will talk about how an opinion is not right or wrong. It is simply an opinion. I want to hear their opinions. We will be organizing our thoughts for the opinion writing piece in this lesson and we will turn those thoughts into writing in the next lesson.
We will be using a Four Square graphic organizer to organize our thoughts for this project. This will be a five paragraph opinion essay. There will be an introduction paragraph, three paragraphs providing reasons supporting their opinions, and a conclusion paragraph. I have provided an instructional video on how to fold a piece of paper into a Four Square graphic organizer. I will give the students the remainder of our time today to complete the Four Square graphic organizer. We will use them in the next lesson to write our opinion papers.
