Frogs and Fish Lifecycle

Objective: SWBAT analyze the illustrations and images in an informational text.
Common Core Connection
This standard is about gaining knowledge that adds to the information in the text by analyzing the illustrations. It requires students to be able to make inferences from images and diagrams to add their knowledge gained by reading.
The Life Cycle of a Frog and The Life Cycle of a Fish are great articles that have detailed diagrams and images that add to the details in the words. The text are complex in vocabulary and sentence structure so this allows my students to exposure to challenging, yet interesting text.
I show the class the image of the frog and ask them to discuss the life cycle of the frog with their partner. This is focusing their attention to learning the content, but I will go into questions and answers in the guided practice. I am just getting the class interested and thinking at this point. While they talk I assess their prior knowledge and then share some of their ideas.
Next, I tell the class the lesson plan so they feel comfortable, and I don't have to answer what are we doing next a million times. Being proactive seems to be helpful. Last, I state the lesson goal and ask the class to repeat it. This helps them remember the focus skill of the lesson. I can gain knowledge about details in a text by analyzing the illustrations.
At this point the lesson is winding down and I need to assess what my students know. This helps me plan future instruction. So, I ask them to discuss what they can learn from analyzing images. Hopefully, they will say they can learn more details about a subject. Whatever they say I will share some great ideas, and add that we can learn a lot of details in the illustrations.
Then we chant the lesson goal to remind the students what the are learning about, but it also give my English Language Learners an opportunity to practice speaking in complete sentences.
