To open class today, we'll review their outline ideas for Sally. (This is a continuation of yesterday's lesson.)
I want to talk pros and cons and build an new outline for Sally on screen with their ideas. This is good practice since they will be creating their own soon.
The goal is that students will learn from her mistakes and apply that to today's task.
I will be going out of town tomorrow, so my students will have a substitute. As a result, today, I am giving them their first shot at an authentic argument of their own.
Students will use the OREO Argument graphic Organizer and online sources to complete a short argument focused on convincing me to let them read their AR books for the entire period on the day I am away. Their goal is to convince me that allowing them to do so is a good thing and will help them make progress on their goals.
I have provided several sites for students to use in order to pull evidence to support their short argument.
To wrap up class, I will have students self-asess their efforts. I'll ask them to write the letters OREO vertically at the bottom of the page and place a check mark by each one they addressed or included - opinion/claim, reasons, evidence, opposing argument.
Afterward, I will ask that they leave them in the caddy to turn in. I'll determine tonight if they get to read while I am away.
