Practicing our Presentations
Lesson 4 of 6
Objective: SWBAT to practice their presentations in order to be clear and coherent.
In my lesson openers I always have a "connect" in which I connect students' thinking about yesterday's lesson to today's lesson. I then have a "teach" in which I model for students the lesson of the day and also have them try it out. When I think about my modeling, I use three categories; skill, strategy, and process. I model by stating the skill to the students, then giving them a strategy in which to use the skill, followed by the process to try out the strategy.
Connect: I will say, “We have been working hard on our presentations, today we are going to practice our presentations. Just like we practice our writing before we do our final draft, we need to practice our presentations before we perform it.
Teach: I will say, I am going to practice the skill of planning out my presentation. I am going to use the strategy of adding persuasive techniques and writing down notes. The process I will use is as follows:
1) Read through the various persuasive techniques.
2) Read through the rubric for presentation practice.
3) Jot down notes for each text structure (divide up the structures if doing with a partner) using the Presentation Planning Sheet.
4) Practice in front of a small group by keeping the rubric in mind
We will read the rubric together and I will ask students to turn and talk for the three components in their own words. We will write down the rubric in our own words as a class. Then I will show the students how I plan out my presentation, keeping the persuasive techniques* in mind. I will jot down the order of my Prezi and the persuasive techniques I will use in my writers notebook.
*My next unit is persuasive essay, therefore I am give students some expose to it in order to front load the next unit and for me to determine what they know already.
Active Engagement: I will say, “Now you are going to read the persuasive techniques with your partner or by yourself and plan out your presentation. After about 10 minutes, I will ask students what persuasive techniques they used (at least 3 students-one who is at standard, one is approaching standard, and one who is above standard).
Closing of Active Engagement: I will say, remember successful presenters practice the skill of planning out their presentation. They add persuasive techniques and write down notes. The process they use is read through the various persuasive techniques and requirements, jot down notes for each text structure and practice in front of a small group.
Independent Practice: Students will then practice by using the below options:
1) Have a print out* of their Prezi and practice with another group who will give them feedback using the bottom part of the rubric sheet.
2) Practice in front of the whole class using the Prezi on one computer (this would have been my option because I only have one computer the students could access which would have taken two class periods).
3) Have students practice in other classrooms if there is other adult support (I chose this option because I have a student teacher and an AmeriCorp member in my class) and use the Prezi on the computer.
*This is currently difficult because Prezi prints out each pathway as one page. I could have done this option by having students use their Prezi planning sheet and had them update it as they were developing their Prezi.
I believe that the end of the lesson should be an assessment of the days’ learning; therefore it should be independent work.
For closing today students will turn in their presentation notes. I will assess what they learned so I know what to remind them of tomorrow. Here is what my students learned.
