Week 10 test 7th grade vocabulary.docx - Section 1: Mini-Lesson

Vocabulary Quiz
Lesson 5 of 5
Objective: SWBAT demonstrate their understanding of a word by taking a short quiz.

Mini-Lesson
This short lesson is meant to be used as part of a daily lesson on every Friday. Every Friday we have a short quiz before our lesson of the day.
Teach: I will say, I am going to practice the skill reading over the week's vocabulary words and roots in order to find other words with the root and determine their meaning. I am going to use the strategy of repeating the words and synonyms off the Word Wall. The process I will use is as follows:
1) Repeat the words off the Word Wall** with my classmates
2) Use my weekly vocabulary sheet and study by myself or with a partner
3) Do my best on the quiz!***
I will have students do a class-wide choral read of the words. They will then have five minutes to study the meaning of the words and root.
A rule I implemented in the first week they received vocabulary words (the second week of school) is that they have to call home if they receive below a C. I started with half of the class receiving a D (we have a lot of homework issues), now and up to 80% of the class getting a C or better.
*All weeks are included in the first lesson of this unit.
