# Complex Numbers Day 1 of 2

## Objective: Students will be to add and subtract complex numbers.

#### Warm up and Homework Review

I include **Warm ups** with a **Rubric** as part of my daily routine. My goal is to allow students to work on **Math Practice 3** each day. Grouping students into homogeneous pairs provides an opportunity for appropriately differentiated math conversations. This lesson’s Warm Up- Complex Numbers Day 1, asks students to determine whether you can add an imaginary and a real number.

I also use this time to correct and record the previous day's Homework.

#### Complex Numbers

We begin this lesson with a video discussing the graphical representation of imaginary and complex numbers. After watching the video, the students write a summary and we discuss the summaries as a class. I found this article very helpful if you are interested in some additional reading on this method of looking at imaginary numbers.

At this point, we will look at the complex plane as an extension of the number line and use it to graph real, imaginary, and complex numbers. We then look at the graphical and algebraic representations of the addition of complex numbers (**Math Practice 5**). One goal here is for the students to identify what happens when you add a complex and imaginary or real number (**Math Practice 7**).

We conclude this lesson by look at multiple methods for subtracting complex numbers.

I like the homework. It was the amount of problems to quickly determine if they understood the concept. I especially like the maze because it could give more practice but it would make the students think. Very good planning of the homework.
