We will start class with ten minutes of reading. I will read with the students.
Before we dive into our practice time, I will review the main pieces of their speech assessments from the rubrics that I handed out last week. Specifically, I will remind my students about the time limit and the importance of being aware of their audience.
I will ask the students to review what they have written so far for elements of content and rhetoric. This will be individual work time before I release them into the chaos of practicing their speeches out loud. Their final speeches will be written on note cards, so this is also a time to review their written argument and prepare their materials for their speech deliveries next week (CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.9-10.1).
Once they've reviewed/worked on their written drafts, I will ask my students to partner with one or two other students and practice running through their speeches as much as time will allow. They will only be allowed two-three minutes for their final speech delivery after Thanksgiving break, so I will ask the listeners to time their friends as well as providing any feedback that they can offer about their hooks, content, rhetoric and/or the speeches as a whole (SL.9-10.3).
By allowing time for practice, I am hoping that each speakers final presentations will be much stronger when I actually assess them for the standards (CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.9-10.4 and CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.9-10.6). I will instruct students to use their rubrics to guide their feedback and their revision process (W.9-10.5).
While the student are practicing their speeches, I will circulate the room to assign speech delivery days using a dice to make things random and fair. I will also be listening for glaring issues or concerns and offer feedback or answer questions as need be.
Before we transition into Social Studies, I will call the group back together to provide some reminders and encouragements. The timing of these speeches isn't ideal, so I will remind them to practice often over their Thanksgiving Break. I will also remind them about their reading homework from A Tale of Two Cities and remind them that I will be available via email later in the week/over the weekend if they have questions or concerns.
