# Addition Strategies Review and Fluency

## Objective

SWBAT solve addition via multiple strategies and build fluency in addition facts.

#### Big Idea

My class has been solving addition through several methods. I want them to compile a list of addition strategies and practice towards fluency of fact knowledge.

## Rev Them Up

5 minutes

I will have my students play a game of "Around the World."

Directions: This is a competitive game to see who can say the correct answer first.  You begin by selecting two students.  These students stand up and you will ask your question.  Whoever says the answer first, wins.  The winner is then matched with a new person and the same process proceeds.  You will continue to match the winner with a new person until everyone in the room has a turn and the final winner is produced. I love this game because it can be used in any content area. Go here to see a video of my class playing the game to compare numbers.

Today's lesson will review addition strategies and work towards building fluency in solving addition equations, which correlates with our common cores standards for first grade. (1.OA.C.6). For this game I will have my students answering questions towards "simple addition facts." Watch the video in the resource section...they love this game!

Continue with numbers like this until everyone has a turn.

## Whole Group Interaction

15 minutes

Need: Print the pumpkin patch strategy materials and copy for all students.

My class will create a "pumpkin patch of addition strategies." Print the pumpkin patch craft pieces from the resource section. I will explain to my class:

Students I want us to talk about all the strategies we have learned about and that we use right now for solving addition problems. We will make a list using the pieces to our pumpkin and then put our pumpkin together.

Watch the videos for all the strategies my students shared with me; using tally 'susing subtraction to solve additionusing fingers, and using commutative property. I was quite impressed by what all they remembered and use. You can also view pictures of a work in progress and another work in progress. First Graders are sponges and a work in progress. They are developing the ability to focus their attention and continuously testing their ideas and determining what works and what doesn't. As they continue to focus their attention and attempt alternatives to solving problems, they are developing very important skills of making sense of mathematical situations and learning to persevere to solve for correct answers. (MP1). This lesson allows them an opportunity to discuss their thoughts and actions to solve an equation, which is an important piece of CCSS.

## Independent Practice

10 minutes

I will have my students practice their flashcards with each other. You can go here to see what I did when I introduced flashcards and to access online resources for flashcards. Students should be practicing with their flashcards at home with siblings and parents. The more they practice, the faster they will build fluency with addition facts. Common core standards strive to have our first graders develop strong skills in addition strategies, use these strategies to be able to compute equations abstractly and then build fluency in solving the problems with precision and fluency. This entire lesson will help my students master standard 1.OA.C.6, solving for fluency, while building towards MP6, using precision.
