# Polynomial Quiz and Factoring Puzzle

## Objective: Students will be able to factor polynomials.

#### Warm up and Homework Review

I include **Warm ups** with a **Rubric** as part of my daily routine. My goal is to allow students to work on **Math Practice 3** each day. Grouping students into homogeneous pairs provides an opportunity for appropriately differentiated math conversations. The Video Narrative specifically explains this lesson’s Warm Up- Polynomial Quiz and Factoring Puzzle which asks students to determine whether a polynomial has been factored properly.

I also use this time to correct and record any past Homework.

#### Polynomial Quiz

I have two versions of this quiz on a PowerPoint. Each column of students will take a different version to deter copying. This quiz assesses their knowledge of the first several lessons in this unit. There is one multiplying exponents problem. They are asked to write an equation that is also an identity. Finally, I give the students two quadratic functions and ask them to add, subtract, and multiply them. I gave them problems are the more challenging side of each lesson. If students are able to do these problems, they obviously have these skills. I do allow students to correct quizzes if needed.

#### Factoring Puzzle

Each student receives one pre-cut puzzle and a glue stick. They will begin this as soon as they are finished with the quiz. I put them in snack baggies to make them easier to keep track of. They will match the factored form with the polynomials to form a square (**Math Practice 1**). There are edge polynomials that have no match. The goal of this activity is to give the students some additional practice. Students can choose to use either the algebraic or graphic methods of factoring (**Math Practice 5**). Factoring is a skill that students need a certain amount of repetition to turn into a usable skill. This may need to be finished for home work.

I use an exit ticket each day as a quick formative assessment to judge the success of the lesson.

Today's Exit Ticket asks students to describe what strategies they used to solve the puzzle.
