# Percents Pre Assessment

## Objective: SWBAT represent and apply percents to solve problems.

**POD**

As students enter the room, they will have a seat, take out their **Problem of the Day** (POD) sheet and begin to work on the question on the SMARTboard. The POD allows students to use **MP 3** continually based on the discussions we have about the problem each day.

The POD today will be a skill review to get students thinking about writing percents. Writing a percent is a skill that students should have-I want them to remember how to write them so that as we move to application and problem-solving that will not be challenged by the skill. We can discuss the conversion and the meaning behind skills and tips they may use to do the conversion. I want them to understand the connection between things like moving the decimal point two places and multiplying by 100.

Write 0.35 as a percent.

Students will take a Pre Assessment today to serve as a formative assessment on their understanding and problem-solving with percents. I want to use the Pre Assessment as a Post Assessment when we complete the unit. We can use the Pre Assessment as a starting point. I will answer questions about it when the class has finished. We will use similar problems as we work through the unit to build understanding. This assessment will show me where I need to focus as we move through the unit. If they can write decimals but cannot apply the concept of percentage, we can focus there. If they can apply the concept, we can concentrate on extending their understanding to percent increase and/or decrease.

To end class, I want to stick with the skill of using percents. Students will answer two questions:

Write 0.725 as a percent

Find the product: 300 x 0.02 x 8

We can review the answers in class if students finish in time. If not, we can use the responses as a **My Favorite No **or as future **PODs **if the responses show that students do not understand how to solve the problems.
