# Integer Addition

Lesson 3 of 13

## Objective: Students will model addition of integers using number lines and two-color counters.

**POD**

As student enter the room, they will have a seat, take out their **Problem of the Day** (POD) sheet and begin to work on the question on the SMARTboard. The POD also allows students to use** MP 3** continually based on the discussions we have about the problem each day. The POD will come from the PreAssesment students took in the previous lesson:

What is |-21|?

Using this question gives us the opportunity to ensure students understand the concept of absolute value before we move into addition of integers. A lot of my students will say that the value is -21 and this question opens the door to a discussion that serves as a review of absolute value. Having students volunteer answers aloud or putting them on the SMART board starts our discussion.

**Learning Target**

The target for the day is also on the SMARTboard each day when students enter the room. I put the learning target on the board each day so we all know what the focus of our work will be. The target for today’s lesson is to begin to develop rules and understanding of the addition of integers.

The **Exit Ticket** asks students to describe a rule they discovered when adding a positive and a negative integer. This prompt serves as a formative assessment on the activity today.
