## Objective: SWBAT understand rotations.

## Big Idea: Get kids fluent in rotations by providing them with a lot of independent practice with rotations!

#### Warm Up

Each day, students complete a warm-up that usually consists of spiraling the previous day's material, in addition to older material. Warm-up problems also sometimes extend lessons that students have encountered before to more unfamiliar contexts.

#### Huddle

*10 min*

In keeping with the theme of having kids sketch their own graphs when the question does not provide one, we review #4 in the huddle.

I ask kids to come up to the board to sketch their graphs, and walk through their logic, and then we critique/respond to that kid. If I have time, I might ask how the problem would change if I did counterclockwise instead of clockwise. What about 180 degrees?

Claudia - thanks so much for posting this kind note; I appreciate the feedback. I am in NY but am not using the EngageNY materials as a base curriculum; I found that I like using my own materials while using EngageNY questions as a bar for rigor as well as sample problems. I prefer walking through the material in ways that I think generate understanding in kids, and I generally try to simplify rather than make more complex. :)

The structure of my class is based on a sports theme:

a) The warm up - a few questions that spiral previous material and set the stage for the day's lesson

b) HW check - exactly what it sounds like.

c) Play of the Day - this is the aim/objective for the day - the new "play" we are learning in preparation for our season. :)

d) Practice - this is the time dedicated to practice where kids can get better.

e) Huddle - after each practice time, it's always good to bring it together to summarize/consolidate learning, point out misconceptions, and allow students to explain their answers.

Hi Jeff,

This looks awesome!! Very useful. This is our first time doing Geometry in 8th grade. So this is uncharted territory and I am out looking for good and helpful stuff. I noticed you are in NY. We are using Engage NY as our base curriculum. Do you use any of it? Your instruction seems much simpler.

I love your idea of football theme (play of the day, huddle). Any more details on how you use that?? I'm looking forward to checking out your other lessons. Thank you for sharing!!
