# Introduction to Functions

## Objective: SWBAT define a function using standard mathematical terminology.

#### Warm-up

*10 min*

Each day, students complete a warm-up that usually consists of spiraling the previous day's material, in addition to older material. Warm-up problems also sometimes extend lessons that students have encountered before to more unfamiliar contexts. In this case, the warm-up has two spiraled review, straightforward question giving kids practice in evaluating expressions.

Number 3 is a more challenging application problem. I will insert challenges at the end of the warmup over the next few days. For this one, I like to make a table that identifies the first integer as x, and then define the other two integers as x + 1 and x + 1 + 1 (I draw an arrow with "+1" on it from these two columns). Then, I always say, "To figure out one unknown, what do we need? (An equation.)"
