Students will be able to solve real world and mathematical problems on adding integers with multiple addends.

More than two addends? No problem! After this lesson students will be comfortable adding lots of numbers, regardless of their sign.

**Opener: **As students enter the room, they will immediately pick up and begin working on the opener. Please see my instructional strategy clip for how openers work in my classroom (**Instructional Strategy - Process for openers**). This method of working and going over the opener lends itself to allow students to construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others, which is **mathematical practice 3**.

**Learning Target: **After completion of the opener, I will address the day’s learning targets to the students. In today’s lesson, the intended targets are, “I can solve real world and mathematical adding integer problems with multiple addends.” Students will jot the learning target down in their agendas (our version of a student planner, there is a place to write the learning target for every day).

**Instruction: Multiple Addends Explore Narrative**

**Table Practice**: Students will work with their homogeneous table groups to complete 12 adding integers with multiple addends application problems - Versatiles Activity. For these problems, students will reason abstractly (**mathematical practice 2**) to write and then simplify integer expressions which model (**mathematical practice 4**) the given scenario. With this topic, it is very important that students are precise when paying attention to the signs of the numbers, **mathematical practice 6**. Students will use a set of versatiles to check their work, and I ask that students persevere with the problems (**mathematical practice 1**) until they find the correct answer. As students are working, I will walk around to monitor student progress, as well as stop and work with tables who appear to be struggling. Based on the previous activity, I will have a good idea of which students will need additional assistance.

**Write Your Own: **To summarize this lesson, I am going to ask students to write and solve their own multiple addends integer problem on the back of their opener. Students like to make up their own problems, and this activity will give me a good indication of who is grasping the concept and who is not. I will ask that they place their papers on the opener table on their way out of my room.
