Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Flowers for You: Skip Count by 5s to 20 - Section 4: Independent Practice and Informal Assessment

When I designed the independent practice portion of the lesson, it was important that the students had to write each number (5, 10, 15, 20) when counting.  The students are very quick with rote skip counting to 20, but many of them do not understand what the numbers that they are saying actually express.  It is important that the students have the opportunity to match the numerals up with the groups of objects they are counting.

Skip counting is an important skill for many mathematical tasks  Not only does it provide a quick way to count groups of objects, but it is necessary for work with time and money.  The Common Core does not have standards for money or time in kindergarten.  Exposure to skip counting is important foundational work for time and money work in future grades.
