Reflection: Modeling Students Prepare For the First Timed-Writing Assignment - Section 4: Examining Sample Student Essays

Although I am guilty of not doing this enough, it is clear to me that looking at sample essays is crucial for students who are struggling to develop their writing skills, like my students. The top essays in this packet were a bit shocking to my students. Several expressed admiration for the good writing and I hope they were inspired by it. The essay that received a score of 4 is especially useful because it feels within their reach. It is important to communicate this to students. It is also important to be honest and also communicate how often their writing falls in the realm of the level 3 essay. I express my frustration with the writing I receive from them with tons of potential but that just was not able to reach a solid place in the realm of the level 4-essay. The time I spend having these honest conversations with students is very valuable and I recommend that teachers with a similar student population as mine, take the time to expose students to sample student writing on a regular basis. The challenge for me has been to find the writing samples that make sense to review during instructional time, but it is worth the time and energy spent finding these materials.
