Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding American Dreams and Money Nightmares: Themes in 'The Great Gatsby' - Section 2: Pre-Reading : Teacher-Led Discussion


While I initially planned on a more "traditional," teacher-led class discussion, today's conversation about the themes took on a life of its own, as students began to develop understanding of the themes in "The Great Gatsby," build on each others' ideas, and react to each others' opinions. Students' conversation today was quite impressive.

Objective: SWBAT participate in a collaborative, teacher-led discussion on the themes of "The Great Gatsby" by drawing on their own reactions to questions addressing these themes.

Big Idea: Thinking about themes! Today, we are discussing pre-reading prompts in order to anticipate The American Dream, money, happiness, materialism, and nostalgia.
