Reflection: Lesson Planning Pizza Party Invasion - Section 5: Connect to Clocks

Students need spiral review throughout this year, but this is most effective if the review is related to what they are learning. This makes what they are learning more robust, while also helping them practice skills that they have already learned.

This is the reason I chose to connect this lesson to the idea of clocks. Students in first grade are expected to tell time to the hour and half hour (1.MD.B.3). I have already done a unit (see my Tick Tock unit) on time, but the idea of "half" will help students understand why we use the phrase "half hour".

This was the first time I have ever made this connection explicit for students, and it definitely helped them understand the phrase “half hour” more. It also helped me as a teacher make sure that even though we did this unit 4-5 months ago, students can still tell time to the hour and half hour with no problem!
