Reflection: Diverse Entry Points From Text to Film: Of Mice and Men - Section 2: Film Clip


One of the best administrators I've worked with once made it a mandate that student viewing of a film had to be shown over more than one class session.  This was to curb certain teacher behavior he had noticed on classroom visits, that of dimming the classroom lights, pressing play, and promptly getting busy on some other non-student-centered task (napping, Facebooking, etc.).  His theory was that for no reason should it be acceptable for a student to watch a film from bell to bell, with no direct instruction, no pause between scenes to discuss, checks for understanding, etc.

To me, this makes perfect sense in the English classroom, and works to a teacher's advantage in multiple ways, some of which I have already mentioned in my narrative and video.  However, what I have found most advantageous in this method of viewing a film is the way that small doses of a film can ignite a spark in those students who either struggle with reading certain texts or who are perhaps just simply tougher sells when it comes to reading literature.  

For example, today I witnessed one particular student of mine who struggles with basic reading comprehension, a student who often misinterprets texts and who has difficulty with making inferences.  As he watched the film, I saw him fully engaged, and because the film so closely follows the text, he finally "got" the relationship between Lennie and George (before viewing the film, he had expressed his suspicions of George as simply manipulating Lennie).  As a result, he can now return to the text with more clarity and with more confidence.
