Reflection: Joy Haven't We Met Before? Chapter Two of Of Mice and Men - Section 3: Whole Group Reading: Chapter Two, Of Mice and Men


I once had the privilege of teaching a film analysis class to eleventh and twelfth graders for about a five year span.  I loved teaching that class and grew to appreciate the bond that develops between viewers of a shared film.

Reading a text together can produce the same results.  If I could get away with reading all the novels I assign my students as whole group, I think I would.  Nothing beats the collective laughs and gasps at key moments in a text, nor the absolute satisfaction a teacher feels when she knows she's got her students hooked on a book.  

In addition, whole group reading allows for teacher modeling, a practice that sometimes disappears all too soon in a child's educational development.  I have always made it a practice, be it with eighth-graders or twelfth-graders, of incorporating whole group reading sessions in which I participate in the reading along with my students.  It is my belief that a student never stops benefitting from this practice.
