Reflection: Relevance Informational Text Features: Finding features on your own - Section 2: Mini-Lesson

We spent time in the beginning of the year discussing genre so students know that the two main categories are narrative and informational. Some strategies can be used with both genres, like making predictions, making connections, and finding cause and effect. Some, however, are exclusive only to narrative text, like plot and characterization. It is important to have conversations about this with students so that they have the right types of books in their browsing boxes. A lot of students tend to read only narrative or only informational and it is good for them to get a different type to complete the independent practice tasks. Informational Text Features is obviously a strategy that can be only be used with non-fiction books so for the assignment today, students must have non-fiction text in their browsing boxes.
