Reflection: Checks for Understanding What Are Adverbs? - Section 3: Assessment

Prior to Common Core, students only needed to know the definition of nouns, pronouns, verbs, and adjectives. Now the expectation is that they know the function of adverbs. This first lesson was not an easy task for my students. While they were able to identify the adverb in the sentence, they were inconsistent in identifying the word it modified. They often drew an arrow to the noun. It may be that the focus has been on nouns, how verbs tell what the noun is doing, and how adjectives describe nouns. For support, I referred them back to the definition posted on chart paper on the board and the example sentences. This helped them refocus on the verb and how the adverb describes it.
