Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Thank you, Thanksgiving - Section 1: Warm up: Why we celebrate today.


Children have difficulty understanding the concept of "being thankful".  My ELL students don't understand the meaning behind the American holiday of Thanksgiving.  By showing a child friendly video at the beginning of the lesson I hope to set the stage for what I am going to talk about.  I want my students to be excited and engaged in my reading of the story.  If they are engaged,they might comprehend the content enough to ask and answer questions about the story.  If there is comprehension of the story, the students will produce sentences that are grammatically correct an use proper conventions.  I often start my lessons with a video to elicit interest and at the end for a review.
