Reflection: Accountability Workshop Time For Notecards - Section 2: Workshop Time To Create Notecards


This lesson came at a busy time in the year. Students were not only working on this, but also working on vocabulary quiz, reading for an author visit, and had notebook writing to do. I walked out of the school the previous day expecting to do a different lesson but I thought about what students were doing and realized that perhaps I was asking a lot of them. It wasn't so much the challenge of the work itself but the challenge of the amount that I thought students might struggle with. I decided to give them time in class to work on these note cards. It was not so much to help them learn how to work on these note cards but really to create a place where they can. Even though I wanted this project to be independent work and done outside of school, sometimes school needs to be just a place to work. We can offer the best guidance but also offer them a place to take ownership of their work. When I told students that I changed the plan for the day they were relieved. It's crucial to listen to students like this and to anticipate what they may struggle with so necessary changes can be made.
