Reflection: Routines and Procedures Dystopian Novels: Book Club Two Preparation - Section 2: Book Club Discussion Preparations


I am totally guilty of overloading students with too much to think about. I need to remind myself often that I have read all of these books more than once. I am also a really fast reader. My students need to be given the time and space to discover ideas, read the text and then discuss their findings. By building my schedule to reflect these goals, I hope that they will not only enjoy the books more, but that they will be able to hone some of those independent reading/thinking skills that 3rd quarter sophomores should exhibit. 

You will notice if you look at this unit as a whole that each day looks similar to the one that came before and the one that comes after. I think it is important to build rhythm and flow with units, specifically with units that are pretty student-driven. 

I have found that my students have found their rhythm with their reading, but have yet to find the rhythm with their analysis. Part of this is likely because the students need to get their heads around the roles, which I had hoped they would do prior to their first discussion, but apparently, they did not. Not to fear, though. They aren't so lost that they can't be found! 

I had a LOT of questions today. The good news is that they were really good questions. Similar to Monday, I feel like giving them work time was good for two reasons. It gave me a chance to make sure they understood bigger ideas about theme, character and style. It also gave them focused time to think about these things. Their blog posts are AWESOME! I attribute this to the extra thinking time.

Objective: SWBAT draw evidence from literary text to support analysis and reflection by completing individual tasks to prepare for group discussions.

Big Idea: Today we will engage in our second day of book club preparations so that students can establish a rhythm for their reading and analysis for this unit.
