Reflection: Rigor Finding Meaning In The Structure of "Street Music": A Socratic Seminar - Section 4: Socratic Seminar


Okay, so at the beginning of this unit, I let the students read a poem that basically said, don't tear a poem completely apart, just enjoy all that a poem is. Well, there is a fine line of interpreting the poem. We don't want to go too far into it that students can't stand reading it, but we certainly need to make some inferences about the poem to truly dig deep into the text. I knew that this new standard of looking at the poets' choices of structures and how they might relate to meaning was going to be hard. I even have heard teachers say that this isn't fair and is causing our students to dig too deep and hate poetry. I didn't want this to happen, but I also see the power is making inferences in the authors' craft. When my students got that you can turn this poem sideways and see a city skyline, I nearly lost it. I had the camera in my hand, so I contained that excitement, waited until I stopped taping and then brought them all back to that realization. I was so impressed that my students could do something that others believed they couldn't. Kudos to my kiddos!

Big Idea: It has been said that figuring out why a poet chose a certain structure may be too hard for you. Let's put our heads together and prove them wrong!
