Reflection: Students with Disabilities Analyzing Theme, Characters, and Plot - Section 3: Character Study


I purchased some highlighter tape awhile ago. It came in a set of six colors, and put a small piece of each color tape on an index card for each student.  I didn't bother collecting them; it was just a gift to students. 

The first time we used it, I used it to close read a passage.  It didn't work so well.  For close reading, it's worth it to have a copy that students can directly annotate on.  For an activity like today's, though, it works well. 

Like most things, using the right manipulative at the wrong time can be a disaster.  Using it at the right time, however, leads to additional student engagement and learning.

Analyzing Theme, Characters, and Plot

Unit 11: Analyzing Literature and Integrating Knowledge with Act 2 of “The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street”
Lesson 6 of 14

Objective: Students will be able to determine the theme of “Monsters” by close reading the resolution of a teleplay (Act 2 Scene 3) and analyze a character's impact on plot events by making inferences about characters' direct and indirect traits.

Big Idea: The monsters are here. . . and they are us.
