Reflection: Standards Alignment Jack London Letter & Timeline - Section 1: Reading "Letter to his Publisher"

As we seek to bring the instructional years into alignment, gaps inevitably appear.  One of the areas in which I notice a lack relates to primary sources.  The reason is obvious -- as English teachers, we usually work with literature, and even our historical texts tend to be secondary sources.

So, the availability of primary sources is a good reason to work with the biographical information that is so tempting to skip.  Often, if you do an author study, you can find a letter or two from that author.  Reading a letter instead of, say, an encyclopedia entry, allows the students to hear the voice of the author OUTSIDE of the more constructed perspective of a novelist or short story writer.  They allow for a discussion of references and inferences.  And, sometimes, they are amusing or sarcastic, which is an added bonus.
