Reflection: ELL Students What Color Are You Today? Exploring Figurative Language with Dr. Seuss - Section 2: Analyzing Feelings and Making Comparisons


I had students during this lesson that were just struggling.  It was hard for them to come up with the comparisons so I sat with each of them separately and helped them think through their feeling and comparison.  For instance, one girl said that on orange days she felt happy.  She just couldn't think of anything orange and happy.  I asked her why she felt happy on orange days and she said that orange made her think of oranges and she loved oranges but her mom didn't buy them often so when they had oranges she was happy.  I asked her what an orange could do.  She said, "When they're juicy, they squirt."  We finally put all that together to say, "On orange days, I feel like a juicy orange squirting on a new shirt."  After we did that one comparison together, she was able to come up with more on her own.  She just needed that little extra bit of modeling and support.  I did this with each of my ELL students as well to make sure that they were not having trouble with the language.  

Sometimes students don't need modification in the assignment, sometimes they just need a little extra one on one.
