Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Connection Time: Drafting Our Essay About Ruby's Variations - Section 1: Do I Just Copy These Cards? Modeling the Rough Draft


I can't tell you how many times I've heard the phrase, "Do I just copy my (insert prewriting form here)?  My students, since I've been teaching, have been unsure how to transform prewriting into rough draft.  Each time we go through the writing process, they want to copy their graphic organizer and call it a day!!  

My hope is that by modeling how to move from graphic to essay the students see that it's a process.  I want them to see that the graphic is a quick sketch of their thinking but the rough draft is where all the details go.  Modeling is the only way I can see to get to that- and A LOT of modeling is going to be necessary!!

In the meantime, I will continue to look for brilliant ways to get my students to make that transition, but for now it seems like hard work and grit are going to be the only ways to get us there.
