Reflection: Student Ownership Area With Halves - Section 2: Group Work

I attempt to make my lessons hands-on, where students are doing the "heavy lifting". With each set of cards there are 2 shapes, and they all require students to apply different tools to solve for area. Students are given the freedom to solve in any way that they see fit, but they must be able to defend their strategy choices. Students are at different points in their understanding, so I never tell them that they must use one particular way. That would be providing them with a procedural choice, not an understanding. I want them to understand, and can get there when they decide and then defend the reasonableness of their choice.
