Reflection: Gradual Release What is Area? - Section 4: Close


I chose not to introduce length x width in solving area on the first day. Other teachers may disagree with this choice. For my students, I feel that it was important that they experienced counting 1 by 1 in order to see the their marks on the cards to show the entire area. This develops their conceptual understanding.

I will use this tedious procedure, later, as an example to illustrate how sometimes we need tools and strategies in order to solve for area more quickly. This will lead me to tomorrow's lesson where we will section parts of a figure off to then multiply. This made sense for my students and that's why I chose this activity as the introduction

Objective: SWBAT understand that a closed figure or space covers area, and we can find area with square units

Big Idea: Area is the concept of covering a region with “unit squares”.
